New Addition to the family.. Jackson RR3

Ok.. this was from about... 6-8 months ago... so, March or April 2009?? About there..

There has been a new addition to the Jackson guitar family in the Ong Residences....

I'm not gonna go into too much detail about this.

I basically acquired the Jackson RR3 guitar from a guitar friend, Arise Ong, who sold it for me at a very good price.... (no hes not my bro or relative).

Well, this is gonna be about something that happened in September 2008. Yes, a year ago.

Ok, so I went and did something interesting and different (to some ppl it may seem crazy....to hell with them..haha).

I went to get myself a tattoo... yes i say it again.. Tattoo!

Its a tattoo of one of my favorite guitars which i own. Its a tattoo of a Jackson KE. Although it is a different color from mine.

Yeah, the title of this post speaks for itself. It seems that i havent been updating my blog for about a year and a half. Thats coz i've been too busy screwin' around with my life and what not. Haha.

Anyway, i guess i should really take some time to update this...

I've got lots of interesting info/toys/gear to update everyone. However i shall not post everything in detail as its just gonna take way too much fuckin' time, which is something i feel that i do not have a lot.

Anyway, here goes it.... well this will actually show below those newer posts im gonna put up later.. so i dont know whats the point of me typing all this anyway... crap... there goes more wasted time again......

AIA, The start of my Career

Welcome back folks,

As some of you already know, I'm currently working for AIA (American International Assurance) Singapore. Started this job on Oct 22, 2007.
Working there as a Business Analyst. Hmm sounds pretty interesting eh? Well, it's a very different job than what I had expected at first when I saw the ad in the papers. But now that I'm in it, I feel that it's a decent job with challenges in understanding system logics and how insurance plans work and so forth....good place to learn alot!

Great place to work at, especially with great colleagues!

So far I'm in my 5th month I believe. So far so good...

1996 Fender MIM Standard Stratocaster

Hey there again,

This time its details on my new Fender MIM Standard Strat!
It comes in a very unique color. Some kinda sonic/metallic blueish look.

I acquired this sometime in June 2007 from the US, particularly Boston, MA

Here are the specs:
Alder body (HSS Cavity for upgrades)
Maple neck
21 Medium Frets
3 Stock Fender Single Coils
Stock Vintage Tremolo
1 Tone 2 Volume Controls
5-way PickUp Selector

Not sure what else I missed out at the moment but there you go!

Somehow I feel that I am not fated to play strats. Well at least not 21 fret strats with single coils....darn it....
It seems that I just can't get used to this guitar. Oh well, give it another shot first before I do anything. Might even sell this baby away just because I know I probably won't be using her anytime soon as well.

Great stuff though. Too bad I was brought up with 24 fret guitars and thin necks that are very well made for playing metal and hard rock. You know, those late 80's/early 90's kinda guitars. Hehe...

Gear Updates!

Since a long time has passed since I last posted here, there have been some gear changes as well.

First up, the BOSS GT-6 is no longer in my possession. Its been sold somewhere in May.

Next in line is that I am selling my Crate Blue Voodoo 60w Tube Amp.
I know its a pity, however it has to be done since I'm way under using the amp.
Will probably get something smaller in the near future once this is sold.

New Gear Announcement!

I have acquired a 1996 Fender MIM Stratocaster!

I will be posting more detailed pictures of that pretty soon. Probably within the next couple of hours. But it seems that I am not fated to play 21 fret guitars. I don't feel that comfortable with it plus I am also too used to the 24 frets and a thinner neck.

KORG Toneworks AX3000G has arrived at my doorstep.

I haven't had much time to play with it yet, however from what I tested at the shops it seems to be a darn good pedal and at a very good price as well!
I will post more info on that soon as well.

Well, stay tuned for the gear updates as I post more info on the newly acquired gear.

BOSS GT-6 Multi-Effects Pedal

BOSS GT Central

This is a pedal I wanted since I started playing guitar. And it's finally in my hands. Great pedal. Does just about everything and works wonders. It is alittle difficult to configure though because there are just too many settings and you have to do very precise tweakings to get something awesome from this.

Anyway still an awesome pedal despite its complexity. Thank you Boss for making this!

1995 Crate Blue Voodoo 60w 1 x 12" Combo Amp

Ok here's my main guitar amp. Well, currently my only amp.

Its a 1995 Crate Blue Voodoo 1 x 12" 60 watt combo amp!

I bought it in 2003 from E-bay.

Couldn't really find much info of this amp online as it is probably obsolete already. Not even the Crate website has details on this.

Basically here are its features:

2 Channels (Clean and Gain)
4 speaker jacks (2 for 4 ohm and 2 for 8 ohm)
Single Reverb and Presence control
A Bright switch for all channels
A Boost switch for Gain channel
Low, Mid and High knobs per channel.
Master Volume
2 x 6L6GC Power Tubes
3 x 12AX7 Preamp Tubes

What I like about this amp is its clean tones.
The gain channel is quite weak for hard rock or metal, but it does blues overdrives very very well. I guess if you have a overdrive pedal, it might work well with this amp to get heavy metal tones.

Clean tones are not Fender sparkly, but it has alot of warmth and clarity to it. Mainly because of the tubes used as well.

Zakk Wylde Les Paul MODDED

Yo people~!
Yesterday I just spend a couple of hours modding Chan's Epiphone Zakk Wylde Les Paul.
He wanted Pickup swaps and Spin-a-Splits!

He got himself a Seymour Duncan Hot Rodded Set in black which consists of the SH4(JB) and the SH2N(Jazz neck).

Threw the pickups in, made his 2 other pots into No-Load pots using pliers and nail polish!
So now there's added versatility! He can split his JB and/or Jazz into single coil mode!

After all the installations I did some testing. And wow! It sounds great. Not a guitar for metal though, but awesome for Blues to Rock! Fat, thick and warm sounding even with the JB/Jazz inside (they're known for bring bright pickups).

Here's a clearer picture of his guitar with the Duncans in them! Enjoy

During the hair-metal/rock revolution, guitars like these were being made! In my opinion, these are the best kinda guitars to get for those kinda music!

This is number 6. I got this in Singapore from the SOFT Forum classifieds. When I saw it, I thought "Woah, classic looking guitar! Gotta get it!". And I did get it.

This guitar plays like a dream too! Thin neck and light body. lets you run up and down the fretboard easily. Love the last 5 scalloped frets. Gives me a lighter feel so that I can bend more easily.

Had a few pickups lying around, so I decided to throw in some Seymour Duncan Pickups. mainly, JB, APS-2 and Jazz neck.

I know how the JB sounds, so no issue there. Cuts thru the mix with a mid-highs boost. It can get too trebly, so I changed the pots to 250K for volume and tone.

As for the APS-2, it has a warm yet slightly glassy kinda tone to it. Not that warm but not shrill as well. Very Balanced sounding pickup in my opinion. Looks cool too, being black to contrast the white humbuckers.
Seymour Duncan Single Coils were new to me. I had no idea how the APS-2 would sound like at all when I got it. But I had to try and believe in Seymour's pickups. I love the tone of it! Warm sounding with a slight bite. Does solos very well, and it gives off that vintage kinda tone which I never have in most of my guitars.

In the neck, the Jazz fits the spot. It's very open sounding with a decent amount of highs. But in the neck it warms up alittle due to string resonance in that area. Very versatile pickup. Does very nicely for cleans which are key to my playing. For blazing leads it gives a very nice clear sound without being close to muddy.

This can be argued as on of the best guitars Ibanez has ever made for its time!

It's the 5th guitar I bought. Got it in 2003, off a Seymour Duncan Forum member (sorry I can't remember who it was). Best deal ever!! I had always been GAS-ing for this and I finally got my hands on one!

I chose the Steve Special and Air Norton because it was a John Petrucci (of Dream Theater) setup. I liked his tone, especially the neck, so I went to check up on them and got it. This guitar is a dream to play! It just feels good whenever it was in my hands, very comfortable feel and of course it looks cool as hell too!

To me the Steve's Special's tone was a bit scooped. However it because of that, it provided lots of clarity even under high gain, which was a plus for me. Tight bass response and lots of treble to provide the crunch I like.

The Air Norton is probably one of the best neck pickups I've ever tried. Thick, smooth, warm and punchy! It works great for lead playing. That was the main reason why I got it and I am very happy till this date that I choose that pickup.

This is the 4th guitar I purchased in 2002 at Gutiar Center Boston. I walked into the shop, walked around and then I saw this! I'm a big Dave Mustaine fan so I knew I had to get this, plus it's screamin' "BUY ME!"

When I bought it, I thought to myself, "This will be my all out metal guitar!", and it is now. Since it was gonna be a purely metal guitar, I decided to throw in Dimarzio's fiercest pickup (my opinion), the X2N! It does great for metal! High Treble and Mids with lots of crunch. Very Thrash-Metalish. Plus I managed to snag one off E-Bay for a good price, plus its pink!

After while I didn't know what to put in the neck position. Just then a Seymour Duncan Forum bro posted a Hybrid for sale, so I bought it just to try how good it sounds as he described it. I never tried this in the bridge so I wouldn't know how it sounded there. But in the neck, its a very thick, full tone, with very nice mids. Kinda like a sweeter Air Norton with slightly lesser mids. Tried it once, loved it and now its in there permanently.

Few months later, I was reading up on how to split humbuckers, so I got some advice from a friend, KC, and proceeded on to making a No-Load Pot for the Spin-a-Split. I got a very good single coil tone! Just enough 'twang' and brightness to make this guitar versatile.

Then few months later, I was invited by a friend, Robert, who was then studying in Berklee to go visit Joe Stump! He signed the headstock of the KVX for me and played some stuff for us. I will always remember that day!

This is the 2nd guitar I bought in 1999 I believe. Got it from EM Short Music (I think that's the name) in Witchita, Kansas. Ordered it through the phone!

My sister bought this for me actually. I was the one who ordered it though.
It was an impulse buy at first because I was a huge Slash fan. So I told myself, what the heck, just give it a shot. I never regretted this purchase at all. Thanks Liz for giving this to me as an early Christmas present.

At first I wanted to put in Seymour Duncan Alnico 2 Pro Hums in both positions. However at the point in time, the Virtual PAF models were new, and there was somewhat of a hype going on about how good it was. Very smooth tone with PAF qualities yet modern sounding at the same time with a certain presence to it. So I decided to try it.

As for the Hum From Hell, I had it as a spare lying around. I tried that in my Jackson but it sounded too thin, so I thought, in a Les Paul it might be pretty good with Les Pauls sounding very thick and all. And I was right, it worked awesome in my Les Paul so it's gonna stay there for good.

This is the 3rd guitar I bought. If I remember correctly, I bought it at Guitar Center Boston in Year 2000.

I left the neck spot empty because I had seldom used it. It was a Dimarzio Paf Pro Double Cream pickup. Someone wanted to buy it, so I off-loaded it to him. No regrets on that.

As you can see, the bridge, tuners and neck pickup have been removed. They were removed because I decided to retire this guitar after Marty Friedman signed it when he was holding a clinic in Singapore. Well, if she resurfaces again, I'll let you guys know

As some of you guys might know. I got a friend named Channy who plays the guitar as well. As of today he's the proud owner of an Epiphone Signature Series Les Paul. more specifically, a ZAKK WYLDE Signature Series BullsEye Les Paul.

Congratulations Channy!!!

Ranting about something and showing old pictures of stuff

Ok, it's been awhile since I last posted anything. Now it will just be a rant on how much I dislike Floyd-Rose/Wilkinson Bridges or also known as 'Floating Bridges'.

So I decided to probably sell off all my guitars that have these Floating Bridges and get maybe just one more that has a 'Non-Floating Bridge' (e.g Tun-o-matic, Fixed, Vintage Tremolo bridges)

First up is the Floyd on the top and the Wilkinson Floating at the bottom

Firstly, for floating bridges, it's troublesome as hell to change strings, do pickup swaps, or just maintain. Sure it's cool to use the whammy to wail or dive-bomb. But hell, I'm sick of it, plus I don't really wail or dive-bomb when I play either. So no issue for me here.
Back in the 80's and early 90's it was cool to be using these just because you can add 'creativity' and 'cool sounds' to your playing. So end result for me = Screw Them, I don't need them.

Next up are the Non-Floating Bridges. Left is the Tun-o-matic Stop Tail bridge, which is found on most Les Pauls and other guitars and on the right is the Vintage Tremelo bridge, which comes with most Fender Stratocasters.

For these guys, changing strings is a flash. Simple and straight forward! Sure you can't wail up and down the scale but heck, it's a breeze to maintain! Plus they don't flatten your tone as much as floating bridges do! That's a big plus there. I've grown to prefer these more because they are of lesser hassle for just about anything.

So I'm basically gonna try to sell my floating bridges guitars. Look at the number of guitar cases I have....

...... all these have guitars in them!! Too many, some might say, but I think it's ok. Just gotta get rid of the ones I can't take anymore...

So here's one guitar I'm actually gonna let go of soon. I will be changing the Duncan pups back to stock Ibanez ones even though its a Yamaha. I changed all electronics inside and it works like a dream now. Presenting the Yamaha RGX621D:

New Year, New Guitar

Hello Folks! Happy 2007 to you guys. Hope it will be a smooth and lucky year for all! Finally the Dog year in Chinese Calender is almost over! My luck will change for the better!

Anyway yes, this is my first post for year 2007. And what better way to introduce the new year but with a New Guitar!!

I spent the whole new year just trying to get this baby alive and working again. She's an early 1990's Yamaha RGZ621D. What a classic glam rock/shred guitar this is.

First up is a pic of the electronics which I had to wire up. It gave me some minor troubles but I thought some stuff over and figured out with some guidance from 2 friends.

Anyway here are the specifications for the guitar first:

Alder body with bolt-on maple neck and rosewood fretboard. 24 frets with last 5 frets scalloped.
Yamaha Licensed Floyd Rose double locking bridge.
1 Vol, 1 Tone control (both 250K) with 5 way lever switch.
Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge
Lace Sensor Blue in the middle
Seymour Duncan SSL-2 in the neck

Wonderful guitar I reckon. I got it at a decent deal as well.

Great Jam guys!
Very well done for our first get together with a full line up!
And oh boy our Screamin' Dolphin can really hit those notes. Awesome stuff.
OK, basically I took some pictures of us during the jam and here they are.

We jammed at Four Tones Music. Great place as well with decent equipment and big space for a reasonable price.

I'm thinking next jam will be about 3-5 weeks away. More time for us to practice plus we gotta stay focused on a few songs to sort of 'perfect' them as a band.

All of our band members have been renamed with new nicknames for ease of people figuring out who is who. And the current temporary band name is JAMA, because I made a typo while chatting with them and they decided to use it.

Ok, just went to CCK Lot 1. Supposed to go there jalan jalan however I ended up buying a few too many toys! Well not really toys, figurines to be exact.

Eric's Wedding

Friday, December 15th, 2006. The big day of Mr. Eric Goh Zi Yang. A good friend of mine and also my previous boss. CPT Eric as I used call him. Nice dinner at the Swissotel Merchant Court. Then I think I had many glasses of wine to drink, however I did lost count as well. Anyway it was a good night. Got too see many people whom I hadn't seen in awhile.

Anyway, there aren't any pics with him, coz he was busy the whole night. So I decided to take pics with my other good friends Alvin, and Teri. However there are more pictures with Kenneth. Just waiting for him to send it over to me, then I'll post it up.

As promised, I've put up pictures of my Crate Blue Voodoo 60w Combo Amp. Looks great, though a little old. Bought it used back in 2002 I believe. But this one's an early 90's model. Put in Electro Harmonix 6L6 tubes for the Power Amp and 12AX7's for the Pre-Amp. Awesome cleans but weak distortion! Who needs distortion when you've already got a pedal yeah? Haha

Next up are the pictures of my newly renovated place. Currently I only have pictures of my room and the master bed room's toilet! So these will go up first. When I get the rest, I'll post it up accordingly as well.

Hope my sister sees this as she wanted to find out how things look after the renovation.

Yeah, plus I went to this J-Rock Matsuri thing today at Kallang CC (some kinda local J-Rock gig). All I can say is "What The FUCK?" Basically almost all the bands were worse than sub-standard!! I can't imagine how they are able to live with themselves playing live.

Anyway luckily the last band SAVED the day! They were awesome!! One of the better local bands I've ever seen in Singapore!!

Fender Strats (with scalloped fretboard), Hammer Guitars, and old skool Ibanez Bass and a Korg keyboard.

It was awesome, the lead guitarist played some Malmsteen sorta stuff as the intro, then they moved into playing some Final Fantasy 7 tune.

Well, the last band made it well worth my money. Thank you guys!

I have GAS too! And guess what? I got a BOSS GT-6 today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had a hard time trying to carry it back home from Bedok!!

And Look at THIS!! The Beautiful, Gorgeous, Sexy, Hot, Loveable BOSS GT-6!!!

Today has got to be one of the best days of 2006 for me!
I've always wanted this, since the day I started learning guitar.
Now its finally here. One of my dream is complete!

Renovations Ending!!

Hey my loyal readers! It's been awhile. Currently my place is almost done! But not yet. Left with the Karaoke/Music Room downstairs which is not ready yet. Once that is ready, I'll post every single picture of the new stuff!

For now there are no pictures to put up, as I haven't really taken any nice ones.
Anyway this section will all be Text! So I hoped you enjoyed reading this small little post here.

Anyway, the last week has been bad for me, in terms of just about everything!
Buy drink from kopitiam, the Uncle come with wrong drink.
Wanted to buy guitar stuff, but the seller didn't show up.
Wanted to sell my stuff, but nothing went out, so I got desperate and reduced the prices and then this week all the stuff are almost gone! I got about another 3 items and I'm all set!

Weekend!! Well today was a pretty tiring day for me again.
Moving furniture...Well my room is pretty much done, however still gotta pack up some stuff and make it look nicer. After that then the pictures will be put up...bear with it...heh..

Anyway as I was packing, I realized the amount of stuff I had, so I decided to sell some stuff...like my Acoustic Guitar and my Multi Effects Pedal! If you know anyone interested to buy them, please let me know asap! haha...I'm desperate for cash as well..

My Room is Finally Empty!

Okay, I can't seem to remember what day it is today. Anyway, been moving my furniture for the whole day. Tiring... At last my room is empty!

Stocking up on a couple of movies and games as usual.
The food today was awesome though, wondered if the cook was in a good mood today.

Anyway it was a short trip there as usual.

Gonna start work! My new temp job. I'm gonna be the Network Administration Assistant, sounds nice eh? But actually its alot of work. mindless work of analyzing computer screens and collecting of those data displayed on the screen for the engineers.

At least it pays while I'm at this very broke period of my life. Haha.
So an early start at 0645HRS (a little too early). Coz the place is at Chai Chee...if you dont know where that is, it's near Bedok MRT.

Hmm, its the 3rd day of my sickness. Kinda sad, coz I've got a job interview today!
Oh well...can't be that bad i think. Only just lost part of my voice and feeling weak.

Anyway this Blog thing is kinda getting on my nerves. Why do I have to edit my stuff with HTML coding? Something which I hate!

Plus apparently many links do not work, Why?!? Blogger.com...tell me why my links don't work!!
I don't want to manually key in links for each and every post/archive i have...

Enough complaining.
